When you try to import a file, in some 9.2A+ versions including GL 9.2B, and browse your computer to find the folder, the program keeps asking if you want to create the file.

This message didn't occurred before until you actually selected the folder by clicking open. The reason is because the browsing in more current versions carry over the file name.

If the file name is going to be selected from the source folder, clear the File name from the path before start browsing.

This can be considered a bug since it is not intuitive that you need to clear the file name.

Hi Patricia,

Import files is not strictly looking for a folder to import from, but actually requires selecting a valid file within the folder before clicking the Open button. I believe it should be intuitive that browsing for a file should require selecting that file. A difference of opinion.

But your suggestion for initially clearing the file field on the browse window has been noted.

I agree with Patricia, it is very confusing to the user to be immediately asked if they want to create the file to match the name of the sample template default file.

The prompt comes up immediately after choosing the browse icon from the template options screen when the file doesn't exist (test this outside of sample data to see it). If the user is trying to save the name of a file that doesn't exist, it would make sense, but they will see this before even having a chance to select a new file unless they type the full path in and don't use the browse function at all.

This will happen frequently since the sample files from the default templates don't exist in anyone else's data-sets.

This gets ready annoying when you are trying to drill down through a set of subfolders. Every time you open a new folder you are asked if you want to create the file.

Hi, Doug,

Open refers to opening a file. I'd double click on the folder Iwant to open. The folder opens and I do not receive a prompt saying that the file doesn't exist and asking if I'd like to create it.

Hello Doug,

When I double click on the Folder, it (mostly) opens without the "Create file" message. However, I find the behaviour inconsistent, and it shouldn't be.

Double clicking, or selecting "Open" when a Folder is highlighted should open that Folder and nothing more.

Thanks to all for bringing this to our attention.

I have been doing a LOT of importing lately and I have also found it annoying. Thanks Patricia for that little tidbit about clearing the file field, that will make the process much less annoying!

On a similar note, with the new version of Ledger, every time I log into Financial Reporter, it alerts me that this is a new version of Financial Reporter even though I have clicked the "Don't show this message again" box.

Hi, Lyndon,

Yes, sorry about that. That 'nag' problem will be fixed with the next release of GL and the FR.
